Online Training just gets better and better!
BT and Telspec approached us to produce an on-line training application for them. Telspec provide BT with various products, which has made BT's transition into Broadband effective and extremely rapid. All BT engineers out on the street need to be qualified to install these products.
The solution we produced was a modular based training package. Download times were critical since many engineers would to view the site via dial up connection whilst out on the road.
Each module consisted of a number of pages of course content. Only once every page had been viewed at least once could an engineer take a module test. Both the course material and the questions were powered by a dotEditor content management system. This was critical for the success of the project since Telspec's products are forever being enhanced and upgraded. It ensured that the course material and associated questions were always up to date.
The questions themselves were randomised from a large potential pool of questions specifically aimed at each module. If an engineer failed a test they were able to re-take it but they were not forced to read all the course material again if they had done so already. Due to the random question selector we could guarantee that no user would be asked the same question twice.
The site is only accessible from BT's intranet and was therefore integrated into BT's secure login system to enable engineers out on the road to access the system via their private VPN. This had an added benefit in that we could thus know who each engineer was as they were logged in via BT's Gatekeeper system. This meant that should any candidate pass a module test the system would send them a dynamically generated PDF test certificate containing details such as engineer name, manager's name, date, name of qualification, and the percentage score attained. The Manager would then print the certificate and award this to the engineer on their return to the office.
