At the Johannesburg World Summit on Sustainable Development, 2002, all governments committed to targets to halve the proportions of people without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation by 2015. But progress has stalled and if things continue at the present rate it would take Africa over 30 years to achieve the water target and the sanitation target will never be met. The UK Government, which led the way in championing these issues at the Summit, has lost momentum on these issues.
WaterAid’s new Flush out poverty campaign urges the UK Government to take action on ensuring the Millennium Development Goals for water and sanitation are met. You can help by emailing the Secretary of State for International Development and spreading the word about the campaign.
